The Hustler (Robert Rossen, 1961)

The Hustler

Sometimes the expectations that you have color your reception of a movie. Up was a perfect example. Warned about the film’s dark content, I came to the conclusion that protagonist would die at the end. I also became convinced that the sequence at Paradise Falls was a dream, and that the movie would end with Carl waking up in a ruined house. That made watching the movie quite thrilling. But the non-realization of any of these notions was just a little disappointing.

So it was that when I watched The Hustler for the first time in a dog’s age, I was convinced that Fast Eddie Felson loses in the final contest with Minnesota Fats. The sense of impending defeat makes the movie an even rawer experience.

April 15, 2009

Away We Go has a trailer, and the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival has an opening film. In a happy coincidence, that opening film is Away We Go.

Sam Mendes‘ follow-up to Revolutionary Road has been attracting plenty of notice because a) it won’t be as heavy going as Revolutionary Road and b) it’s written by husband and wife Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. The film is a road movie, with couple John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph trying to find some place to raise their first-born, and discovering a little bit of America on the way.

Leonardo DiCaprio: King of Outer Space?

Christian Bale must have been busy yelling at a lighting guy or something … Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight follow-up Inception has a lead and it’s eco-warrior Leonardo DiCaprio, Variety reports.

Inception won’t have anything to do with the Scarecrow or the Joker. Instead, it’s a science fiction epic. Warner Bros. has described the film as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” Online scuttlebutt also claimed the setting would be “a war for the colonization of Venus.”
