Writer-director Neil Marshall squandered much of the goodwill he earned with The Descent on the terrible Doomsday. His stab at a sword and sandals film suggests that filmdom is still getting the better of him. There’s the wode-painted warrior-goddess from King Arthur, the flaming balls of pitch from Troy, the seven warriors of 7 Samurai and the cold-blue patina of Gladiator. Are references enough to breathe new life into a genre temporarily revived by 300? On the basis of the trailer, the best we can hope for are some chewy performances from Squally faves Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko.
