Trailerama: Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio

Joining the short but noble list of movies about architecture (think Gary Cooper in The Fountainhead or Woody Harrelson in Indecent Proposal) is this documentary on Samuel Mockbee. Mockbee’s brainwave is that architects have to stop building phallic monuments and start catering to an underclass. That starts with Mockbee’s Rural Studio, located in Hale County, Alabama. Director Sam Wainwright Douglas (The Holy Modal Rounders: Born to Lose) sits at the feet of the master and watches his students build a home for an irascible client. Architect breaks ground at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
