THX 3381, American Graffiti, Star Wars … George Lucas was on quite a tear during the 1970s. The director’s space opera spawned a successful franchise and became a touchstone for a generation weaned on its toys. Lucas built his own empire from the returns and produced his share of stinkers, too. Both Howard the Duck and Willow bear his signature. Chief among his crimes against fanboy community he created, though, was the trilogy that began with The Phantom Menace. Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary had the novel idea to put Lucas on trial, using testimony gleaned from Youtube videos posted by Star Wars obsessives. So when we say “novel,” really we mean “terrifying.” Screening at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival.
