Star Trek Boldly Going Into Star Trek 2 Territory

It was always a comforting feeling when the familiar credit appeared: “James Bond will return in …” Trekkie trousers have barely dried from the inclusion of an alien babe in a swimsuit in a pack of Trek trading cards when news comes that the Star Trek sequel is moving ahead for a summer 2011 release.

According to Variety, J.J. Abrams has agreed to produce with Bryan Burk. The director’s chair is presumably open for his return. Trek 2‘s script will be written by Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. The Orci/Kurtzman team worked on the first reboot, due to be released on May 8, and also provided us with the “hilarious” antics of Jazz and chums in Transformers. Lindelof is credited as a writer on over 90 episodes of Lost.

The show biz bible is mum on the story-line, although the notion of Kirk and Spock being trapped on a desert island with Sunstreaker has some appeal. Of course, everything is contingent on fans giving the new Trek a Batman Begins-style warm embrace rather than a Superman Returns-like cold shoulder. The team hope to have their script delivered to Paramount by Christmas.

As for the picture of an Orion Slave Girl above, it doesn’t really do much for us. But we do have some fellas she might like to meet:
