Great Moments in Cinematic Drug-Taking: “Marihuana”

The nutty 1934 mystery/burlesque film Murder at the Vanities is included in a forthcoming set of Pre-Code Hollywood films from Universal. As well as Gertrude Michael‘s ode to the sweet leaf, it also features a swinging performance from Duke Ellington, a former girlfriend of Lucky Luciano, and a delirious recreation of the Earl Warren Vanities. Squint hard enough, and Lucille Ball and Ann Sheridan can also be (allegedly) seen running around in their underwear backstage. The Pre-Code Hollywood Collection streets on April 7.
