Calling All Robots: Daft Punk to Score Tron 2.0

I imagine that at the more zealous film Web site outlets, a regular ritual goes on. Let’s say a movie is announced which involves computers or, better yet, a completely computer-generated fantasy world. “Maybe Daft Punk will do the music …” a reporter wonders out loud, his VT helmet pushed to the back of his head. “Phone the studio and find out,” says the editor, somersaulting over a wii console and chewing on a George Lucas-endorsed Cantina hookah.

And so it was that Upcoming Film Scores blog made the call, Walt Disney answered, shrugged their shoulders, thought “Why not?” and thus we can piggy-back on the news that Daft Punk will write the music for Tron 2.0.

The sequel to the ’80s gamer classic is unlikely to resemble Daft Punk’s last assignment, Gaspar Noe’s punishing Irreversible. In the film, Jeff Bridges’ videogame designer has grown fat off his experiences with the Game Grid, but his company ENCOM is rocked when their guru disappears. That leaves his old nemesis Bruce Boxleitner to take the reins, and Bridges’ son Sean to crack his knuckles and jump into whatever that crazy VG world wot was in Tron. (Cut us some slack, it’s been over a quarter century.) They find Jeff Bridges in a gay bar called the Rectum and smash his head in with a fire extinguisher … sorry, wrong movie.

Tron 2.0 is apparently going to have a name-change, and is directed by Joseph Kosinski. The tyro director is currently preparing a big-screen version of Logan’s Run.
