Great 1936 story about a lynching in a small town. Spencer Tracy is accused of being a kidnapper and is burnt alive in the jail. Of course, he isn’t … but now this decent man is determined to see the townsfolk fry. It’s the first American film by Fritz Lang (Metropolis), and probably one of the grimmest movies a Hollywood studio has ever made. The scenes leading up to the lynching are positively Sophoclean in their intensity.
