Mary Astor, the Blue Diary and the Lavender Ink

The third edition of Warner Bros.’ Forbidden Hollywood Collection is released on DVD on March 24. All six films were directed by William “Wild Bill” Wellman, who announced his arrival in Tinsel Town by landing a plane on Douglas Fairbanks’ lawn. Wellman’s flair for action and pre-Code erotic tomfoolery did not preclude a humanist streak. Other Men’s Women has even been likened to Zola. It stars Mary Astor, while the redoubtable Ruth Chatterton is a madam in Frisco Jenny. Both ladies also feature in this slice of Hollywood history from the L.A. Times.
